Calgary ranked 3rd most liveable city in the world

Calgary has been ranked as the third most liveable city in global liveable city rankings for 2022, tied with Zurich in Switzerland.

This is the highest ranking for our favourite city, which is one of no less than three Canadian cities in the top ten. Calgary beat Vancouver into fifth place and Toronto into eight, out of a total 172 cities ranked overall. (To show what an achievement that is, no other North American cities are in the top ten.)

Over thirty different factors in ranking

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index 2022 ranked each city according to more than thirty factors in five main categories. Calgary scored an impressive 96.3 overall, with scores in individual categories as follows:

  • 95 for stability
  • 100 for healthcare
  • 90 for culture and environment
  • 100 for education
  • 100 for infrastructure

Calgary’s score was only topped by two famous European cities, first place Vienna (99.1) and Danish capital Copenhagen (98.0).

Why Calgary scores so highly in 2022

The EIU report points to the removal of COVID restrictions as helping Calgary rise form 18th place in 2021 to its new third place ranking:

“The top ten cities are also among those with few covid restrictions. Shops, restaurants and museums have reopened, as have schools, and pandemic-led hospitalization has declined, leading to less stress on healthcare resources and services, and even the requirement to wear masks is no longer in force in most situations.

As a result, cities that were towards the top of our rankings before the pandemic have rebounded on the back of their stability, good infrastructure and services, as well as enjoyable leisure activities.”

The reimagining of the downtown area might also have been a factor. As Brad Parry, president of Calgary Economic Development, said:

“An important aspect of the rankings is the focus on liveability for all citizens given economic challenges and it continues to be a focus for Calgary,” said , in a statement. This ranking is an acknowledgement Calgary is a great city for people to make a living and a life as we help solve global challenges.”

Calgary means business

On her Facebook page, Mayor for the City of Calgary Jyoti Gondek said:

“More Calgarians are telling the story of their city, and people are taking notice. Our climb in the rankings for Most Livable City reflects the welcoming nature of our city, its affordability and the opportunity offered to entrepreneurs. We are exuding optimism and inviting people to join us in shaping our future.”

And according to Calgary Economic Development:

“The rankings align with a broader vision of prosperity championed by Calgary Economic Development to include success for individuals, businesses and the overall community and it reveals the city’s underlying strengths provide a solid foundation for the future.“

Same again next year?

Possibly not, as:

“The Economist warns that no ranking is forever, though, and that due to rising inflation, fuel costs, and unstable food supply, next year’s rankings could look much different.”
